How to Stop Following My Jesus.

In Uncategorized on December 28, 2011 at 9:38 am

I was rocked recently as I was reading a classic work in the church by Brennan Manning on grace. As I seek to plant churches or pastor churches or whatever God has for me, I am reminded that He will not lead me somewhere I am not willing to go and in return I cannot lead others to go where I have not been.

Scholars, conferences, blogs, and other’s religious views should shape us…but many people seem to ONLY follow someone else’s Jesus and someone else’s Spirit. How about you? Read on…

“The Word we study has to be the word we pray. My personal experience of the relentless tenderness of God came not from exegesis, theologians, and spiritual writers, but from sitting still in the presence of the living Word and beseeching Him to help me understand with my head and heart His written Word. Sheer scholarship alone cannot reveal to us the gospel of grace. We must never allow the authority of books, institutions, or leaders to replace the authority of KNOWING Jesus Christ personally and directly. When the religious views of others interpose between us and the primary experience of Jesus as the Christ, we become unconvinced and unpersuasive travel agents handing out our brochures to places we have never visited.” [--Ragamuffin Gospel pp.45-46, Brennan Manning]

Lord, take me to the places you want me to take others…make me still, quiet, and dead to the world around me, but alive in your Spirit. Show ME your truth, your ways and your character, and fill others around me who help me on the journey with your light alone.

Is God Calling Your Family Somewhere Else? The #1 thing to ask yourself before deciding to move on.

Should I move? Should I plant again? I’ve hit my leadership ceiling or the vision quota. Should I go somewhere else, because this doesn’t seem to be working as well as I thought it would, and ________________ seems like a great place to plant.

These are some of the calls I get. This is what I just went through in my life over the past few months. And it seems soooo romantic to move from a struggling place [or a place with 4 campuses that is going well like we did from Ohio] to somewhere you are needed and a church of thousands is birthed!

The stories of people moving from one location to another and blowing it up for Jesus are the exception, not the rule! <—– Remember that!

We are getting ready [possibly] to plant our 3rd church in the distant future [6th campus]. All are still doing well and I am currently barely moved into a house in our home state of Ohio to sit, listen, and wait on the Lord for what might be next. Read about it HERE. We still have no idea how we landed here. We think we do, but we don’t.

So with this in mind, here are 8 quick things [outside of prayer, seeking God, supernatural signs, and all of the spiritual things you will write to me saying should be on the list] to assess before deciding if you should move to plant [for the 1st time or 3rd time and when to stay put] and what I believe is the  #1 MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION TO ASK:

1. The first thing you MUST DO is read CHURCH IN THE MAKING by Ben Arment. [This is #1 for a reason, please read it. Best church-planting book I have read in years.] It will help you more than anything I am about to say, and you will read it in a day and it will mess you the hades up.

2. Realize that the grass is not greener anywhere else. If it isn’t working here in God’s power, location isn’t always the answer.

3. If your church is still averaging less than 50-75 adults [100 total], you should consider an entire re-launch, because you were not or are not ready to even be a “church plant” yet.

4. Have you given it your all for 3 or more years and are you considering moving to an area that you are VERY FAMILIAR with, such as a hometown or area you have spent significant years in? If so, maybe a move is right.

5.Is your family sufferingin some way due to this current calling? If so, maybe a move would be in order, but the pain and wounds will still follow.

6. Do you love God’s church more than God’s people? You can’t love the church like Jesus did. You aren’t called to! You are called to LOVE GOD and LOVE OTHERS, and a church will be birthed out of this, not the other way around!

7. Did you ever have a coach, or do you have a coach? If not, CALL ONE RIGHT NOW AND WORK THROUGH THIS WITH THEM! If you don’t know who to call, then e-mail me: chazzdaddy17@gmail.com // let’s talk.

And lastly, here is what I believe might be the #1 most important question to ask yourself:

8. If you were to die right now, where would you want to be buried? This is where I would say that you are called to plant a church. No…really…it is. Go there. Now. Don’t delay. God has birthed a passion for you in this place or you wouldn’t have this desire.

So GO…do what God is asking you to do and may HE DIRECT YOUR PATHS [Proverbs 3.5-6]
