unbelieveable.

In church planting journey on May 30, 2009 at 2:34 am

There are probably 300-400+ churches in the town where I am serving right now in Hartselle, AL [population: 50,0000. [side note---there are very few engaging the culture there. this one is.]

In the greater Salt Lake area there are 2.1 million people [and as the fastest-growing state in the country it is projected to grow to over 4 million people in the next 20 years!]

How many churches here? 231 [yes, two hundred and thirty one].

and 60% of those are less than 50 people.

UNBELIEVEABLE.

will you help do something about that?

go to www.missionwest.tv and sign up to hear about this church-planting project we are engaged in. you don’t have to go overseas to find one of the biggest unchurched population on the planet.

“How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!” [romans 10.14-15]

salute.

In memorial day on May 25, 2009 at 12:42 am

there was once a navy man,

newly married,

2 kids.

he was a fighter test pilot and aspired to be an astronaut.

the pilot volunteered to fly a plane for his friend who was having a child,

but the plane blew up just after take off.

the 2nd child of the pilot was a girl who was 6 months old at the time,

and she never knew him.

her only desire was to and wrap her arms around him and call him “daddy” just 1 time.

she went on to have 3 kids of her own.

the eldest grandson only knew him through the stories,

and his deep desire is to spend just 1 day together…

and of course…to SALUTE him.

that pilots name was MacFaddin Moise, United State Air Force.

and so today I give a humble, yet strong SALUTE to the man my mother never got to call “daddy”,

and the grandfather i deeply desire to spend just 1 day with.

yes, today I SALUTE you deeply.

THANK YOU for keeping me FREE and SURRENDERING your life for my FREEDOM.

[and to my other 2 grandpa's [1 army, 1 air force] that i had to privilege to know very well…i salute you as well and miss you very much.]

i am struglling with this: HELP!

In theology on May 21, 2009 at 11:56 pm

But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: “‘Be holy, because I am holy.‘” [1 Peter 3.16]

Legalists have their “lists” as to what is HOLY.

Non-legalists seem to go to far at times with PERMISSIVENESS.

Are we relegated to “lists” of “what pleases God?”

It seems there is no line between SACRED and HOLY anymore.

What say you?

I am finally ready for this.

In Church Leadership, Spiritual Growth, church planting journey, spiritual battle on May 19, 2009 at 4:08 pm

I have been all over the place in my method of life, ministry and leadership. I am finally ready to make this more a part of my life than ever before.

If you are rocked by this…you are numb. Satan ALWAYS gets us thinking radically different than this, and other church leaders don’t help much, myself included.

This short read is WORTH YOUR TIME LIKE NO OTHER. Francis Chan brought it HERE.

May you also feel 1 inch tall after reading :)

what growing church plants have learned…

In Church Leadership, church planting journey on May 17, 2009 at 8:00 pm

I think one of the biggest pieces of the puzzle for a growing church plant is:

1) being called to the geographical region and growing a burning passion for her.
2) accepting and declaring the unique calling and missional code of that territory.

I believe this with all of my heart and have tried to express this in numerous pieces and parts. Ed Stetzer and David Putman put it concisely in their book, “Breaking the Missional Code” so I will defer to them and their process:

1. CALLING FROM GOD –>
2. EXEGETING THE COMMUNITY –>
3. EXAMINING WAYS GOD IS WORKING IN SIMILAR COMMUNITIES –>
4. FINDING GOD’S UNIQUE VISION FOR YOUR CHURCH –>
5. ADJUSTING THAT VISION AS YOU LEARN THE CULTURE –>

Our team will have to rely on God to help us accomplish this. What has worked in the rural mid-west won’t be the same on all levels in the far west.

What context are you ministering in? You were placed in a certain community, work, school, neighborhood and church for a reason!

what do faith and relationships have in common?

In GET SERMONS HERE on May 14, 2009 at 12:50 pm

I taught on this at Crosspoint during the ROCKSTAR series. If you want to see what your relationships [marriage, friends, family, work, God] look like when faith is the driving force, then check this out.

And don’t miss the end. I demonstrate a classic picture of what FAITH looks like as FAITH is such a hard thing to wrap our minds around. This will help shape it I pray.

leadership is…

In Church Leadership on May 13, 2009 at 9:14 pm

what if God really were the lead “leader” in my life?

leadership is influence as they say, and i agree with that.

but i often wonder this: “do i influence me more than i let God influence me?” because i am GREAT at leading and influencing myself.

i wonder who is winning on the scorecard. really.

When God shows up at just the right time.

I am serving for 4 months while raising support for Utah at an amazing church in Alabama. The pastor I am working for is simply amazing [thank for being a true BROTHER to me], and the church and it’s people have been a comfort and friend [no FAMILY] to us right away.

It was painfully difficult to leave New Hope and all our family and friends, but it has been amazing to see how people we don’t even know have accepted us as family. It has helped make this transition easier.

I have been working with staff development, staff alignment, budgeting, building projects [check out this GOD SIZED STORY...for real], spiritual development/assimilation, programming [the pic is part of the work I did to help re-do most of their lighting, and yes, that is some sick stuff for portable church] church growth, etc., etc., etc….I have loved every minute of it, and it came at just the right time.

I love how GOD stretches us that way. I have ALWAYS found that even though I might whine, beat God up, beg, plead, get angry…HE ALWAYS shows up at just the right time. [love the Abraham story when the knife is raised...]

Our web site [www.missionwest.tv] will be up soon to follow the precise details of what’s next…PRAY FOR US!

THANK YOU to the people of NEW HOPE for sticking behind us, and a HUGE THANK YOU to the people of CROSSPOINT who picked up where my family left off. And thanks to my God for HIS perfect timing.

many.

In Church Leadership, Devotional on May 2, 2009 at 7:07 pm

Many will laugh.

Many will not understand.

Many will not go.

Many will mock.

Many will not like your decisions.

Many will think they can do it better.

Many will say they are your friend, and then turn their back on you.

Many will hurt you at times.

Many will think you are crazy.

Many will think you are motivated by self-interest.

Many will think you are surrounded with tons of people.

Many won’t know that it doesn’t matter.

Many people can’t wait to climb to the “top.”

Many will find out that it’s lonely there too.

Many will want to kill your mission, your call, maybe your life.

MANY killed Jesus too, but what did that do? It freely gave redemption to MANY.

psalm 40.3
He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the LORD.
