get it freaking on.

In church planting on December 31, 2008 at 5:01 am

come on…now that the holidays have slooowed a bit…help a brotha out. check this conversation out, hit the comments and let’s fly with it.

let me know what would be good to discuss and talk about in this leadership community. your thoughts are key to what we do. impress me with your amazing insight and bright ideas. let me know what you want to talk about in ohhh9.

whether you are a fellow pastor or staff person or an attender at NH or elsewhere…what can we talk about? this blog is equal opportunity for all.

and by the way…may I be the first to wish you a: HAPPY NEW YEAR! here is my toast to you:

keep kicking butt and taking the Kingdom by storm as we work together to see the great commission fulfilled RIGHT WHERE YOU ARE CALLED TO BE. stop making excuses…let’s rock this thing. WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO IN 2009 and BEYOND? Don’t pansy out after a few weeks. DISCIPLINE YOURSELF.

whether your church is small or big, rural or city, well resourced or poor, encouraged or discouraged, traditional or contemporary, ugly or pretty, you get the picture. whether you are a Christian with little experience, lot’s of experience, fired-up or ready to give up, scared to take the next steps or taking big strides. DON’T GIVE IN! THE BEST IS YET TO COME.

please…the KINGDOM is counting on us all whether you have a blog, website, big church, small church, no church (like me in a couple months), whether we are well known or unknown, liked or disliked, hip or backwards, new believer or seasoned, manager or worker, healthy or sick, moving up or trying to dig out…

come on…keep the fire burning, keep your Spirit hot, screaming and teachable. most of us are just ONE big prayer and/or idea away from major break-through (and I don’t just mean in your attendance or in your “blessing” in life.) DO IT. STEP OUT. ROCK IT. if He has called you to it…He will see you through it. (cheesy, but flipping true).

hang in there. we are all in this battle together. let’s watch each others backs as we: “FORGET WHAT IS BEHIND AND PUSH ON TOWARD THE HIGH CALL OF GOD in CHRIST JESUS…cause we are not battling FLESH AND BLOOD.” (–Paul in the epistles.) sometimes we win, sometimes we lose…sometimes we get beat up, sometimes we kick some tail.

and by the way…don’t worry, it’s not YOUR battle…it’s not your church, it’s not your family, it’s not your job, it’s not your checkbook…but for whatever crazy reason, we were called to be a part of the battle, part of the story, part of the GREAT REDEMPTIVE DRAMA…yep, you and me and those we serve, those at the cubical next to us, those at the desk beside us in school, those who live across the street that we need to go start a relationship with. we aren’t just puppets held up by the great puppeteer. GET IT! sorry if your theology was offended. or not really. OUR PURPOSE IN LIFE IS WAY MORE THAN A BEST-SELLING BOOK.

it’s been a wild few months for me and our CHURCH (and i bet the same for you, come on…) and I tell you this: Whether or not it is me at the healm…that is NO MATTER…it’s not about me, it’s not about you. it’s all about HIM. this is HIS church, HIS mission, HIS future. HIS story of redemption and grace. He has something perfect for New Hope, for US, and for YOU…RIGHT WHERE HE HAS CALLED YOU TO BE! It looks a little like this:

WE SEE THAT HE HAS BEEN A PART OF OUR PAST…WE SEEK HIM EARNESTLY IN THE PRESENT…BUT DO WE REALLY BELIEVE HE IS ALREADY STANDING IN OUR FUTURES? He’s just standing there waiting on US.

so…whether you are a Pastor, lay worker, attender, or not even convinced about this whole Christianity thing…get on it…HE WANTS TO USE YOU. how freaking cool is that?

dang it…let’s stick with it. eternities are counting on it! get your knees dirty and get it on!!

who’s with me?

small towns/church plating ideas?

In Big Church-Small Town Church Leadership, church planting journey on December 29, 2008 at 5:01 am

Hey all! I am totally enjoying some downtime, including this on-line sermon from family church in pj’s today (watch this…it was amazing…and will help with some innovative ideas for helping people find their service and calling).

So far, it has also included this movie and this man fest getaway night with my brother’s-in-law while here in Motown tomorrow night. And on Tuesday, our family is heading downtown Lord-willing, to serve at this place together.

Tiffany and I are resting after a crazy year that we have seen more amazing things than ever at New Hope, and we know that God has amazing things in store for NH and for us as we seek HIM fully. Rest is KEY to staying passionate! “Divert daily, withdraw weekly, abandon annually.” (Rick Warren). I live by this theme…do you? If not, you are heading for a hard crash!

So…for oooooooooooooh-9, help me here…since I have been rolling in small towns for awhile and since we are planting again…what are some things that you would want to read here that would help you in your leadership journey in small towns or church planting?

Hit the comments and let me know…would love to have a community conversation that will help everyone and MYSELF (or mySELPH, ’cause my boy needs help) in the process.

Blessings all!

what should I read when planting a church?

In church planting journey on December 27, 2008 at 5:01 am

Great question. Besides theology and other older and newer classics that are well worn, here is a sampling of what our team will be journeying through:

THE BIBLE.
Anyone worth their dust will read the Bible cover to cover many times. I am working chapter by chapter through the OT. I am currently in 1 Kings. And I don’t mean reading when you are studying for a sermon or small group.

Leadership:
*21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership. Maxwell
*Developing the leader within you. Maxwell
*Developing the leaders around you. Maxwell
*Courageous Leadership. Hybels
*Good to Great. Collins (there is also one written for the non-profit sector)

Spiritual Growth:

*Into the Depths of God. Calvin Miller
*The Sacred Way. Tony Jones
*The Forgotten Ways. Alan Hirsch
*Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire. Jim Cymbala
*Prayer Series. C. Peter Wagner
*Humility. CJ Mahaney
*Dig into the church structure of Mars Hill, Seattle. Elder/Deacon/Etc. I think there is a book coming out on this, or is it out? They seem to have a nice grasp on the topic, especially when dealing with multi-site churches as well.

Church Planting:
*Planting Fast Growing Churches. Stephen Gray
*Planting Missional Churches. Ed Stetzer
*Simple Church. Ranier
*The Present-Future. Mcneal
*Attend “First Steps in Church Planting Seminar” Taught by Yours Truly or Someone else.

What would you suggest we add to this list?

so happy.

That TODAY the SAVIOR was sent for ME. I don’t deserve it.

That I have an AMAZING family, ALL of them, extended and immediate. I don’t deserve it.

That I serve an AMAZING church family and also know great people like YOU who are passionate about spreading the GOSPEL. I don’t deserve it.

And I am so happy that this year via the Advent Conspiracy, this was the most GOD HONORING Christmas we have ever had. I pray yours is and will be as well.

Merry CHRISTmas to all of you!

I will be on vacation for a couple weeks. I might post some, I might not.

One big thing to watch for: I will be talking about the first area(s) that we have been called to go to and PRAY about a region for planting a church as amazing as this one here @ the HOPE.

While I am excited, my heart is still hurting as we absolutely love the GIFT of being called to THIS PLACE to share the LOVE OF JESUS with this amazing group of people in Loudonville, Ashland, Wooster, China and beyond!

Christmas Eve: this is worth reading just for the picture.

In christmas on December 24, 2008 at 4:58 am

You don’t want to miss tonight’s worship of our Savior. After all, isn’t that what Christmas is all about. We are on the EVE of something crazy that blows my mind every year.

I promise you that you will be turned inside out in the spirit and truths of what HIS COMING to earth really meant.

I have been MESSED UP studying what I am about to present tomorrow night. And the rest of the celebration and reflection is simply amazing as we posture ourselves to celebrate the coming of our SAVIOR. Are you ready or rushed? Hurried or stilled? Anxious or expectant?

Now, go invite someone (send an e-vite off our web, make a call, send annoying e-mails, faxes or telegraph). Seriously. Right now. And pray. Yes, right now. DO IT.

People will meet the KING OF KINGS…and you will be pushed into HIS presence. And PRAYER is the weapon that catapults us there.

See ya tonight…Loudonville (3/5/7) Wooster and Ashland 7pm. Details HERE.

it doesn’t matter.

In are you kidding me?, politics on December 23, 2008 at 5:01 am

I wish to elaborate, but I won’t. You can’t win for losing. Trust me, I am a pastor and if you are too, you know you can’t please everyone all the time. As a matter of fact, just pleasing one is a victory. I usually can’t even win with my wife :)

I am tired of hearing about Rick Warren being chosen to pray (and I haven’t even been listening much). First, the conservatives were mad at Rick for actually being in front of the world and praying to our Holy God, because of course you should only pray for those who are exactly like YOU and Republican. (Doesn’t Scripture call us too: 1 Timothy 2:1-4? Read it complainers).

And now the Gay and Lesbian community is mad because Rick was chosen and they are mad at President-Elect Obama. Why? Because Rick believes the Bible teaches that marriage is only for a man and a woman.

This is why politicians get nothing done. They are forced to pick people who are walking middle ground instead of people who are really the movers and shakers who will get things done and tick people off sometimes. (Man, I get accused of that many times:)

But in God’s power, I believe myself, our team and our church is getting it done as best we know how in the power of God. And sometimes we get yelled at too. I am called all kinds of things all the time, so much so, I am not sure what I am anymore. I have quit trying to figure out the whole helpful vs. hurtful as much as I used to dwell on it. People will never fully buy into everything. We just need to push them to Jesus as best we can and try to come out alive on the flip side.

The media needs something to talk about, and the day everybody is happy, look around: you won’t be reading blogs, because you are obviously in HEAVEN.

Go find Jesus, fall at His feet and sing a hymn or chorus, wear a robe or jeans, electric drums, trap drums, pr satan’s drums, hold up your hands in worship or just sing from your heart, say “forever and ever” or just “forever” at the end of the Lord’s prayer, and ask Him to preach to you expositorily or topically…whatever, get used to it.

what say ye?

what?

In Devotional, church planting journey on December 22, 2008 at 5:01 am

One of the constant things I am asked is: How did you have crazy success 3 times in planting? First, of course, I didn’t…I truly am Spirit-led and without our great God and great team, none of this would have been possible

But one of the most important things I can zone in on is that: I am always learning, growing and pushing to make things happen for the Kingdom. No excuses. If God gives the vision, we will do EVERYTHING He asked without cutting corners…When we don’t, we see less impact. When we do: WATCH OUT!

Not being afraid to say yes in the face of insurmountable challenges, and not being afraid to say no or stop or change course as you learn and grow is also a key. Whether a church planter, a banker, a teacher, a student, whatever and wherever God has you in His story…don’t forget that. This isn’t just for the “professional” clergy. HE has a vision for ALL of us!

I just had a friend who was pretty wild like me in High School stop by recently. He has been radically changed by Christ. He wanted to say how proud he was that we were stepping out, and then he told me he was going to take a HUGE pay-cut because he felt God was calling him from his great engineering job to teach math to kids at juvenile detention facilities. ONLY GOD.

The disciples must have been overwhelmed with their marching orders…and so am I. But to push through and not fear, to always learn, grow and push yourself and your team to the limits with the sole goal of seeing HIS KINGDOM COME is one huge life lesson I have learned. And not being afraid to change course along the journey is the ultimate X factor. Stop/observe/re-orient/move…from week 1 of the Advent Conspiracy teaching.

huge disappointment.

In christmas on December 21, 2008 at 4:00 pm

Worked 2 days in bed to prepare this weekends message only to have it flipped on me. Ended up in ER with complications from the big V last week. After our announcement, I so need and want to see my New Hope family as I missed last weekend too.

I was so on no matter what this weekend, even if I had to go to the ER afterwards and show video Sunday, but it absolutely was killing me to the point of dizziness. Pain meds are my only help outside of much prayer right now.

1 simple request: I will be preparing to teach Christmas Eve and will do it at all costs. It will take an army to keep me out of there. Please pray this thing heals up over the weekend.

With all of the ministry that happens on Christmas Eve and the salvation’s and touch of God that will happen, please stop and pray that I will be ready to go. God will use this for HIS honor and glory. HE knows what is best and a huge shout out to Pastor Tim for stepping in at the last minute. Quick thought: Me teaching on narcotic pain meds would be a freakin’ trip though.

I have the most killer thing planned that God laid on my heart for Christmas Eve and I can’t wait…thanks for the prayers! Now…get out there and invite everyone you know to whatever campus you come too! Let’s rock all our campuses to the core this Christmas Eve…this my friend is what CHRISTmas is all about. Put your parties on hold, and help start a party in heaven.

ouch. a must read 2 minute post for all of us.

you’ve never heard anything like this before @ NH

In christmas on December 19, 2008 at 6:46 pm

I can honestly say that you have never heard a message like this before @ New Hope as you will this weekend.

It will be hard for me. I love this place, and this is tough, but we must be obedient and practice what we preach. That doesn’t make it any easier on us or many of you.

In life’s hardest decisions come the greatest passion.

I promise this weekend will be right from my heart. This message has less script, more heart and I think it will be a blessing like no other.

Come and bring a friend. Let’s celebrate CHRISTmass together.

falling in love with my family…

In Devotional, priorities on December 18, 2008 at 5:01 am

More than THE CHURCH has been a challenge as a church planter. Falling in love with GOD more than the FAMILY has been a challenge. Falling in love with the WORLD more than MYSELF is another one…I could go on and on.

About 2 years ago I learned that I needed to set boundaries. I used to work 10 hour days easy. Then I was slapped down over the fact that I needed to love my family more. Was I not doing that?

The greatest report is that I am so much better on that one. And without a job potentially in a few months…they might want me to go back to work.

But how can you not love the smile in the pic above. That’s our JOI, a true gift from the Father. May I learn to stay in love with the right people at the right times.

we have some information…

In Devotional, church planting journey on December 17, 2008 at 8:00 pm

People keep wanting to know where we are going…I am happy to report that after 4 more days, we have some information:

WE REALLY DON’T KNOW. Really? Really. Nothing up the sleeve, no holding back…are you kidding me? You know I don’t roll that way. We are only following the same call that brought us to the last place on earth we thought we would be…

What is GOD asking YOU to do that might seem absolutely crazy? The best things happen in the craziest calls. Abraham/Isaac–Noah and a Boat–David and 5 Stones–Jonah and a fish–Jesus and the world…on and on.

What thing of OBEDIENCE is He asking you? It might not be life-changing like what we are going through…but then again, how many things in life are? It’s an inch by inch, day by day journey of obedience.

shake it up.

“Change before you have to.” –Jack Welch

We better learn from this. Don’t change because you want to or are forced too. Change because you must. (And this has nothing to do with our present situation…I am talking about ministry, relationships, etc. that all need to change in order to grow!)

In our case it is to reach and teach people about Jesus and to always modify our approach based on God’s voice and the current climate and context we find ourselves. This has been a driving force @ New Hope since day 1.

another can’t miss Christmas vid…

In Watch This on December 16, 2008 at 5:01 am

After the craziness of this weekend between our announcement (see yesterday’s post) of God’s leading in our lives and the big “V” that causes a bit of pain as well (how could both of those happen in the same weekend?)…here is some more yuletide joy to brighten all our days.

only GOD.

In Only God, church planting journey on December 15, 2008 at 3:23 pm

Some of you like us are stunned. We are having a tough week as well and ask for your prayers. I know many of you might not understand the process of this journey, but your prayers and support are drastically needed as we deal with what God is calling us to do.

Yes…I too was stunned when my parents packed up for China and sat in our living room to tell us. Happy, but not happy. Sad, but not sad. Questioning, but not questioning. They lived down the street and our kids and I needed them. Our church needed them. I was mad, angry, sad…amongst other things.

I know some of you are as well about our announcement. Some have even questioned if this is God or Charles? Wow. I understand completely and if you saw the struggle over the past year and especially the last month, it would be obvious that launching out in this horrible economy with no job, no support, and no direction is not a wise thing to do. Only GOD could ask someone to do that.

Here is an e-mail I received from my Dad…you know, the one who would NEVER have trusted Christ…the one who was an alcoholic until I was 18…the one who decided to give the rest of his life to our God. What a story. Here is a recent story that he sent me this morning:

HR asked me and Mary to give the Christmas story and share our customs. We will have 2 hours to present this to managers who have many Chinese working for them here at our campus. The door was not opened for us but it was kicked down. This just is another confirmation why we are here. It was not the job but His job. When we left Loudonville we did not know where we were going or what laid ahead for us and there were many who did not understand our decision. I could not have even dreamed up an opportunity like this let alone be chosen to do it. Like Abraham, we packed up our tent and followed the calling.

I know you are feeling a bit like this now. But your map is already printed and you will not get lost when you follow His directions. This Thursday evening at 6:30, China time, is our time to present the “message’’ so get some folks together, if you would, and PRAY for us.

The English salon, as it is called, is when I teach company mangers English from 6:30 – 8:30 pm every Thursday evening since last April. To be honest there was many times I thought of quitting because I don’t get home until 9:30 and I am so tired? I tried to convince myself it was not worth the effort? Wow, I would have missed this opportunity had I quit. It has been a long 9 months teaching every week but I guess 9 months was better than wandering in the wilderness for 40 years until I was properly prepared.

Somewhere in China,

Dad and Mom

an uncomfortable thank you.

In church planting journey on December 15, 2008 at 5:01 am

To all of you who have sent kind words and prayers to us, we appreciate them so much. WE NEED THEM more than you could ever know. This has been a very tough month, and week of course as we let everyone know what God was calling us to do in our lives. I know I sounded confident in the video, but honestly…we hurt big time. This was our home. This was our mission. We didn’t want to leave, we were called by God. If you missed the blog post, see it HERE.

Some won’t understand this. Some will be sad. Some will be hurt. Some will criticize us even more. Some will rejoice with us in obedience to the call. Where ever you are, we walk humbly with you knowing that God’s timing is perfect. And though we saw ourselves here for a long time…He is in charge.

And while we hurt, we know that God didn’t bring us here to see something not continue on long after us. By the way…one way or the other, you won’t be here forever either! It’s all about HIS MISSION. What will YOU continue to do about it? (I won’t let up, don’t worry:)

It is so NOT ABOUT US, but all ABOUT HIM! I was so comfortable here and in a groove. God shook us up, and I know many of you feel the same. But that is how God works. He shakes us up when we least expect it.

Go do this again? …WOW. It is real now. This was so much work, so much blood, sweat and tears. But HIS KINGDOM is worth it…big time.

I can only pray that God sends people as good as all of you to help reach and teach the WORLD about the love of Jesus. Let’s keep doing that together knowing that God truly knows best. Because when He calls…we better OBEY. That is the only thing that I can have confidence about. If this were about us…we would be destined to fail. WHAT IS GOD ASKING YOU TO BE UNCOMFORTABLE ABOUT? What is He asking you to do? I’m walking it…how ’bout it?

Thanks again for your prayers and support. I know God has someone who is ready to be as crazy-passionate about this mission as I am and always will be. Let’s pray that God will use our staff and leaders in the interim, and that He will shake up the next leader to carry the torch here at New Hope.

I will be updating you as much as possible here at this blog and in the worship program as we know anything. As we said, we really don’t know anything right now! We hope to have some exploratory and prayer trips in the new year. And if you are a church planter yourself, feel free to follow the journey here as I will try to help you out as much as myself in this journey!

See you all this weekend as we continue to push forward on bringing the conspiracy of Christmas back to this crazy world. I and our family need a little Christmas love right now.

Uncomfortable…yep. Shocked…yep. Ready to obey…yep. Love you all.

answering the call of obedience.

In church planting journey on December 14, 2008 at 5:00 pm

I can honestly say that I did not see this kind of post coming.

I will be brief as I could write VOLUMES and I plan to share memories over time, but for now, I need to keep this to a minimum, which is still a freakin’ book, trust me. If you missed the video announcement this weekend, I will be posting it as well ASAP. Below is a summation and some other information regarding our call of obedience.

When I do something, I leave it all on the field. I give my all. I don’t look at “stepping stones to a career.” Being obedient as a full-time pastor or full-time Christian is no different. If it is a “career” then you have missed the point. When I was a Police Officer and when I was in other “secular” jobs, I never saw what I did for Christ as a “career” but a calling. A calling of obedience.

I preached my first message in 8th grade and everyone said that I was “gifted” and that I should be in ministry. It took me some time to come to the same conclusion because I was not where I should have been spiritually. When I decided to teach a Sunday School class while a cop in Columbus, it was desperately obvious to me that I was to serve God (I hate to use this terminology) as the thing that brings a paycheck home. Why do I hate to say that? We all should be serving HIM with ALL our hearts, whether paid in earthly sums or not.

I was then called to be a Youth Pastor in Grand Rapids, MI. That’s where I met this crazy man and his lovely wife. We were SHOCKED when we served less than a year there, because when I do something…I am ALL IN and am not looking to see when the next golden opportunity will arise.

It was then that we packed up everything and without a job moved back to the town where I graduated from High School. We were devastated that we were taken from the place where we had fallen so in love with a group of students and looked forward to spending a long time there. But God has other plans. You know what those were…6-1/2 years later, New Hope has become something far beyond what any of us could have asked or imagined. I now see WHY he wrecked our lives and left ourselves, our staff and our kids weeping. But that didn’t make it any easier at the time. Time usually heals, and in this case it did, and the amazing calling of New Hope has been an amazing ride.

30 bold, courageous, daring people decided that a town that hasn’t seen growth in many decades was the place to start a ministry so crazy, that only God could have orchestrated it. Everyone said…huh? Really there? That can’t work! Thanks to all of you, Converge Mid-Atlantic and Berean for believing in us!

6-1/2 years and probably close to 1,000 decisions for Christ later, the dreams of those 30 brave men, women and kids still echo through campuses in Loudonville, Wooster, Ashland, China and those who join us on the web. Once again, only God could have thought that one up.

Along the way hundreds of you have joined in this journey. Some of you since day 1, some of you maybe this is your first week @ New Hope. You have become a part of not a church, not “our” ministry, not a cool thing, but a MISSION that God has called each of us into.

I don’t care if I or our staff know your name…Jesus does and what you are doing for the MISSION is reaching and growing people every day, and for that I SAY THANK YOU! There are a ton of ways to spend your TIME, TALENTS and TREASURE, and I thank you for putting them to use for the Kingdom. Tiffany and I and our launch team could have NEVER accomplished this on our own. IT HAS AND WILL ALWAYS TAKE THE POWER OF EVERYONE TO MAKE HIS KINGDOM FAR-REACHING. And it is to that Kingdom that I turn my attention.

Almost 18 months ago, God began to make us uncomfortable. We didn’t know why, so we just tucked it away and continued to pray and seek His face. This summer, it was undeniable and I started really writing about it in my journal that I was re-reading recently. And a month ago, it was certain after much prayer, seeking wise counsel and spending time with my wife discussing this huge thing. We were being called to something different for the Kingdom and away from New Hope. Not in spirit or heart, but in person.

Again, the detestation. A month of tears, heartache, and pain. Watching my wife, kids, family and friends go through this with us has not been easy. Not pain at God. Just as the call from youth pastor to here, there are relationships we treasure. It’s more about the detestation of wanting to know WHY? The detestation of telling our family, friends, staff and kids that God was moving us, and we couldn’t even say where.

I want you to know that I (we) practice what I preach. One of my favorite stories is the call of Abraham in Genesis 22. He was instructed to do something crazy…sacrifice his son. That’s crazy. (What a foreshadowing of Jesus huh?) And the other thing that now strikes me is that he was just told to walk to a certain region and when he got close God would tell him more. And that is where we find ourselves.

After HOURS AND HOURS, literally days of draining conversations with other pastors, leaders, our staff and Elder’s. We knew what we were to do, but nothing else. God is calling us plant another church. Some people have asked for years, “How long are you staying here…isn’t there bigger and better opportunities.” That’s easy. NO. The best opportunity and only opportunity to us is where God wants us. Whether a small town, a metroplex, or a foreign country. And I mean that. We practice what we preach in regards to being obedient to the call. We have always said that small towns don’t deserve second best. If this were a stepping stone, I would have stepped long ago. Our hearts and passion are here, but God is opening up something different that I am sure we will grow to love as it is revealed.

We have not been hashing an exit plan, as a matter of fact, we have dreamt of one day owning the farmhouse I grew up on east of town and planned on being here for a long time. If you couldn’t tell, we are and will always be passionate about this area! This was a shock to us as it is to everyone else. We just started a campus, things were just starting to click in place, we had a highly regarded national conference and boom…God sets a burning bush in front of us.

I wanted to keep this brief, so I will answer a few questions here and then allow you to follow the journey as it unfolds.

1. Are there problems here? NOT IN ANY WAY. To stop any rumors, there is nothing wrong with me, there are no juicy stories, no misconduct, there are no staff/pastor/elder rebellions, fights, disagreements, etc. Sure, we are experiencing an economic downturn like anyone else, which makes church planting and raising money even more a challenge and a question for us as to God’s timing as well in our lives! We will be doing some debt retirement in the new year Lord-willing just to make sure that we are stable if things continue to grow worse. That is wise and prudent. But there are NO ISSUES AT ALL and this came as a shock to all of us and our staff and Elder’s.

2. Where are you going? WE DON’T KNOW. We have no job (though of course over the years I have received opportunities). I am a church planter at heart, and as of today we feel called to plant another church somewhere. WHERE is up to GOD. This is another confirmation to us. God had us turn in our resignation with NOTHING and NOWHERE TO GO! Only God.

3. Why tell us on video? We did not plan to tell the church until January or February when we knew more, but unfortunately there were leaks from those we told in advance planning for the future. We wanted you to know first hand and not on the rumor mill, that is why we chose this weekend to talk about it knowing it is months away from happening. This was only decided after leaks were discovered this past Wednesday. Things spread rapidly in a small town and we wanted you to hear the truth, so the sooner, the better. I wanted to be there for 2 services after the announcement before going on my yearly vacation break after Christmas, and this weekend I had a medical procedure done, so video was our only option. We also didn’t want to have to decide where would be live or video as we love each campus and service with the highest of love and care and didn’t want anyone to be left out, but for all to experience the same gratitude.

And yes, I hated talking to a camera.

4. Will the next plant be close to here? NO. We would never do that to this ministry. We believe it is outside the state of Ohio and could even be international. We are waiting and listening.

5. Who will take over here? The beautiful thing is that God has been preparing our church for years in this. Pastor Jeff Cooper and our highly capable staff at all of our campuses have been trained and are ready as they always are in my absence. I have always tried to hand off as much as I can for leadership reasons and also in case I were to be called away or die. That is what leaders do. It has been a steady hand-off over the years, but never with the intent that I would leave, that’s just what leadership requires!

We desire this church to not only outlive ME, but ALL OF US. 100 years from now if Jesus doesn’t return, I pray that this will be a church on fire! Jeff has been with us since day 1, pre-launch. He knows all about how I tick and how the church needs to operate in the interim. He has been prepared for a “time such as this.” He needs your utmost prayer and support. As do the staff and elder’s.

6. When will you be leaving? Again, we are not sure. The projected date is that I will turn over Sr. Pastor duties to Jeff on February 1. I will serve as an Elder until the end of April, and will probably move to the next location as school releases in June. In the meantime, I will be providing help and leadership in the transition while continuing as I have for years of handing off power and delegating responsibilities to ensure for a smooth transition.

I will be preaching on and off until Easter and will be highly visible throughout this process. In the meantime, I will be the “church-planter in residence” and also spend part of my time working and preparing the next church planting opportunity. I am grateful to be able to transition this way and the Elder’s and new apprentices have been a joy to work with. Our goal is financial, spiritual, and ministry health, not our next move. We will be devastated if anything were to be disrupted during this time of transition or afterward.

We will be putting our house on the market, but even if it sells quickly, we will still stay here to ensure a smooth, healthy transition, even if it means a move to an apartment for some time!

7. Will there be a new Lead Pastor? Yes. Pastor Jeff at this time does not feel led to assume those duties other than in interim. After I leave or shortly before, the search process will begin for a new Lead Pastor. During the downtime when I am not on the payroll, we will also be able to continue to build a savings buffer financially which is a benefit to being patient as well. Patience is a huge key in this. Our membership will be voting on who the search team will nominate as the new Lead Pastor only after the candidate has preached publicly at least 2 times.

8. What about our multi-sites? Our multi-sites are 1 church in multiple locations. We plan to implement the same strategy we were going to talk about this January, which is a slight deviation from what we have been doing.

Our plan was and is even more now. to raise up teaching pastors at each location to do more on-site live preaching. After my departure, and even now, the leadership strain of not having enough staff for all 3 locations has taken a toll on us all. Allowing someone on the ground to work with our first campus in Loudonville to maintain the New Hope DNA, but at the same time beginning to preach and lead more in the particular community where they are is a goal we set.

Where and what the future holds is no different than what we have experienced in the past, when we went from all video to a mixture. We will pray, experiment and LISTEN to all of you as we walk this path. Our campuses at all locations will continue to experience vibrance and growth and will continue to impact their communities with or without my presence! It’s about HIS MISSION and we need YOU ALL TO STAY THE COURSE as we push forward at ALL CAMPUSES, I promise that this will be stronger and healthier than ever before.

9. What can you do right now? PRAY. PRAY. PRAY! We need you now more than ever to stand shoulder to shoulder and love each other and our communities we serve. Don’t let rumor and discord surface. It’s up to YOU to keep the mission booming, and I know it will! We are resilient people, that is why I love being here so much. This might have been the biggest, best, craziest group of people I will ever have the chance to help lead…only God knows that!

I love all of you and your passion for not ME, but the KINGDOM IS AMAZING! We need you to be POSITIVE and PROACTIVE! Don’t cower back and wait and judge the new guy. Keep it going every day! There are THOUSANDS WHO NEED JESUS, and they don’t care who the Lead Pastor is, they just need Jesus. Gossip, back-biting, and jockeying for position will only get this ministry at all campuses 1 thing: destruction.

It is us to us to make this thing happen even better than before. There are a TON of things I never got to accomplish and mistakes that I made that I pray will be figured out by whomever God calls. But the mission will continue with all of us doing what we are called to do as individuals and as the church,

And pray for the teaching pastors and new lead pastor that we will be searching for. God already knows who that is! And that uncomfort is building in their lives, just as it did mine. He knows where we are going before we do, and he knows exactly who will come in here and kick butt in Jesus name after we leave. He already has someone and something in mind greater that we could ever imagine! Patience, prayer and trust is the key!

10. Can we help you and Tiffany in the next phase? Of course! Pray for us. Consider when the time comes of supporting us in prayer and finances. Some of you might even move with us to plant a new work if God is calling you to the same thing. There are a million ways to support us and I will be using this blog to share in the entire journey. I am also excited about the last series I will teach this Spring called: “Knowing God’s Will for Your Life.” We have just walked it…and many of you will as well as you are doing right now! It’s not a job, it’s a DAILY LIFESTYLE to know and hear his call!

I am sure there will be many other questions, and at our January Congregational meeting, we will be hosting a town hall gathering in conjunction with the membership meeting at each campus to give more details than we have right now.

Specific prayer requests for us right now: Pray as seek God’s call. Pray as we seek to sell our house and also figure out how to pay off some things…which is not easy with this economy. Pray for our kids who are hurting with this as well as they have close friends. Pray that HIS POWER WOULD BE EVIDENT EVERY STEP OF THE WAY! Please stop and pray for us right now if you would. Stepping out with negative debt due to this wonderful economy is not the way to start off in this new venture.

You can also help by knowing simply that we are being obedient and there is NOTHING MORE TO THIS STORY. Nothing, no juicy tidbits or conspiracies or tabloid news, so please don’t ask for “the real reason” we are leaving. We are being obedient and will be led each step of the way just as He did in bringing us here. Don’t ever forget this, despite the way people like to fabricate stories and pass gossip. We came here out of obedience and we are writing the next chapters the same way.

Finally, from the bottom of my heart, I say THANK YOU and that our family deeply loves and cares for each of you! This has been one of the hardest decisions on our family we have ever made. But obedience has to be our marching theme. We know that God has special plans for you and for us as we journey this thing together. I can truly hold my head high knowing that together we have accomplished so much for the kingdom, but for all of us…the BEST IS YET TO COME!

Keep checking back for updates as God sends more to the blank canvas before us. We love you and we love our God and the mysterious, crazy ways he leads in our lives.

I look forward to preaching next weekend and on Christmas Eve and starting phase 1 of collecting the Advent Conspiracy offering as we spend less and give more to help those in our local community and also provide clean drinking water in Africa.

more on the conspiracy…

In christmas, justice and social issues on December 11, 2008 at 3:08 pm

Though this piece has nothing to do with the Advent Conspiracy, it is a neat piece to see just how much we consume in America and how little those around the world consume compared to us. This couple ate on 1 dollar a day for 30 days, not a penny more.

As we: WORSHIP FULLY/SPEND LESS/GIVE MORE/LOVE ALL may we keep in mind that the GREAT LIGHT of the WORLD has come to not only bring salvation, but to bring us the love that only HIS LIGHT can share.

I am jacked about our offering of 1 gift in exchange for 1 life as we meet needs in our local community and as we take fresh drinking water to Africa. New Hope…we are making an eternal difference and a physical difference in this WORLD. Makes me smile pretty big.

Here’s the LINK.

life changing Christmas…the way it should be.

In New Hope Stuff; Teaching Series, Watch This, christmas on December 5, 2008 at 5:01 am

I believe that this Christmas will be the greatest life-changing series we have seen for some time at New Hope. With the economy having everybody scared (are we to fear with God on our side?) …anyway, the only way to truly celebrate the scandal of Christmas is to return to the scene at the manager.

I/we @ NH have slowly through the 6 years done that, but this year, I am ALL IN. Going for broke.

We are WORSHIPING FULLY/SPENDING LESS/GIVING MORE/LOVING ALL. And we @ New Hope will have a chance to not only celebrate the Birth of the King, but to make a difference for the KINGDOM, which by the way, is WHY HE CAME.

If you don’t know about the conspiracy…check this out, and seriously, be prepared to have your world rocked like never before this weekend as we kick this thing off.

And this is not your typical hype in case you were wondering.

In marriage on December 4, 2008 at 5:01 am

One of the things that has saved our marriage and kept it hot is having a regular date night. We do it every week unless I am out of town and if I am, I better be making it up most of the time. The pic is from our date weekend in Pittsburgh last weekend. Glen Beck Christmas Show (Tiff’s Birthday present, she is a freak), then a 5-star restaurant on the hill, a trip downtown and to station square, and the rest of the details will have to end there.

A date night every week even with 3 kids? Yes…we started a baby-sitting co-op. If you want info on how to start one, e-mail my wife Tiffany: stayathomemom76@gmail.com

We go out 3 of 4 Friday’s and 1 Friday I take mass amounts of legal narcotics and help her with 10 kids who invade our space. Our date nights last from 6:30-11:00 pm. Yeah babyyyy. I look forward to that time more than anything. I love hanging out with my bride.

Some date rules: We normally date alone, but love to partner up too. We RARELY run errands, and if we do, it better be a 10 minute deal. We guard these nights with our lives and make no qualms when doing my calendar. We do things we love to do and save and budget so we can do this every Friday. When the occasion comes up that money is short, we stay in for the one carry-out place in town and watch a movie.

Do you still date your spouse? What are some tips you have?
Has this helped your marriage?

STOP MAKING FREAKIN’ EXCUSES and go stir up some heat and passion, then come back and thank me. It just might save your marriage too.

now this is CREATIVE.

This is a QUESTION I have STRUGGLED with for YEARS.

In Christ and Culture on December 2, 2008 at 5:01 am

How do you live IN the world but not OF the world?

I have been a part of churches that have taught me: BE YE SEPARATE AND CONFORM NOT. (KJV of course). And a part of church’s that say: BE ALL THINGS TO ALL PEOPLE SO SOME MIGHT BE SAVED. (TNIV of course)

Ummmm…what in the heck does that include? Would you just give me the manual in black and white? I then ran across a book that spoke this tag:

…Our difference from the world, not our similarity to it sets us apart. But even though Christ followers are called to be different, we’re also called to transform the world. Here lies the tension. We can’t be so far removed from the world that we lose contact, and we can’t be so much like the world that we’re no different from it…

THANK YOU FOR ASKING…or did you read my mind?

Kary Oberbrunner, author of THE FINE LINE has masterfully walked and then explained the fine line and tension that exists between Christ and Culture.

I can’t recommend this quick read enough. Pre-Order HERE or wait 3 more days and snag it off the shelves. You won’t be alone and you won’t be disappointed. Thanks so much Kary for your huge investment into my life and the tension that I have carried for so long.

Kary also graciously donated a whole stack of one of his other books for THE STICKS. Kary is the man. Because FREE is GOOD, and that makes you the man. Of course he is far deeper than free. Thank you Kary for your investment into the Kingdom and into my soul.

I asked Kary a few questions about the background of this book and his thoughts and will share the Top 5 with Kary, my first major label author to feel Small Town, Big Impact was worth a blog tour stop:)

1. What inspired you to write The Fine Line?

I grew up in a Christian home. I did the whole Christian school, Christian college, and Christian seminary gig. One day I guess I woke up and said, gee, I have nothing in common with anyone in the world. In fact, I don’t even know many unbelievers. I found myself extremely judgmental toward culture and I knew God wasn’t impressed. Jesus told his followers he wanted them to be in the world and not of it. But here I was, removed from the world, isolated in my little Christian subculture.

I knew my problem, but I didn’t have a solution. And believe me I looked. Everywhere! CD’s, seminars, conferences, you name it. Sure there was the book Christ and Culture by Richard Niebuhr, but that was written well over fifty years ago when times were different.

Niebuhr, a genius faculty member of Yale Divinity School, named the Sterling Professor of Theology and Christian Ethics, attempted to describe the variety of ways in which Christians interact with culture, and make sense of it. His book was profound, for its time. Many classify it as one of the most influential Christian books of the past century. No other book has dominated an entire theological conversation for so long.

But as a twenty-something at the time, I wasn’t impressed. It’s not that I didn’t like the topic of a believer’s role with culture– I was fascinated by it – but I couldn’t understand Niebuhr’s book. Even though I’d been a pastor for years, graduated from two seminaries, and have a doctorate in ministry, I couldn’t grasp Niebuhr’s style. It’s written for the elite within the academy not for the masses within the church.

You see, in 1951 the world was very different. Homosexuality was considered a mental illness. The divorce rate was less than ½ of what it is today. Prayer was still allowed in school. Abortion was illegal. There was no Internet or cell phones. And attending movies was considered a sin by many.

A book about Christians transforming that type of culture is a little bit different than today. One might argue that our culture back then was much more Christian. On some levels it was easier.

Even though culture has changed God hasn’t. And our generation needs to re-envision what it means to live in the world and not of it. Christians today want to know how they can transform culture not separate from it or conform to it. We need a new paradigm for a new time.

2. What’s the main point of your book?

Christians fall into one of three camps: the Separatists, the Conformists, and the Transformists. Only one camp is relevant. The other two have alienated themselves from the conversation. Separatists reject culture. Conformists embrace culture. Only Transformists change culture.

The Fine Line explores the meaning of relevance. Many people think it has to do with externals like the clothes you wear or the music you listen to. But ironically relevance has little to do with externals. In fact, Jesus illustrated relevance with a story, a parable as he called it.

Jesus spoke about a Jew traveling on a certain road. He was overtaken by some bandits and left for dead. The relevant person was not his fellow Jews who dressed the same, talked the same, and thought the same. Rather, the relevant person was a Samaritan.

On the outside, Samaritans were irrelevant to Jews. They saw the world very differently. But there is a language that cuts through cultures. There is a language that transcends time, location, wardrobes, and wallets. Love is that language – that language of relevance.

It’s why Jesus said that the entire Law and Prophets hung on 2 commandments, loving God and loving people.

The Fine Line shows how we all lean tend toward irrelevance. Separatists think they love God and end up failing to love people. Conformists think they love people and end up failing to love God. But only Transformists love God and people. They’re the Christians who walk the fine line and they’re the people who are re-envisioning the gap between Christ and culture.

3. Why your book now?

Each generation of people who follow Jesus must wrestle with the question- how does one live in the world and not of it. Each generation must emerge with some kind of answer. This question of relevance is, as Michael Joseph Gross puts it, “arguably the most basic ethical question of the Christian faith.”

Christ followers are supposed to be the most liberated, grace-filled people on earth. We’re supposed to have what people want—a message so powerful it will cause the dead to rise and the blind to see. We’re supposed to have the Living God, living inside us. We’re supposed to know how to live in the world but not of it.

Most believers I know don’t know. Most are either out of the world or they’re of the world. No wonder Christians have so little impact, so little relevance.

The world doesn’t want to be sold a product. They don’t want to hear a sermon or handle a Gospel tract. The world wants to see a changed life. And that’s exactly what this book does. It is changing people’s lives because it puts words to an age-old mystery. It is our generations’ answer on how to live in the world and not of it.

4. The title of your book, The Fine Line, refers to what you believe is a fine line between being in the world but not of the world. What are some misconceptions in the Church about what it means to be in or of the world?

Many Christ followers for many years have misunderstood what being in the world, but not of it truly entails. For fear of being of the world, the Separatists (in the book “deceived God lovers”) have forever attempted to escape the world. Their motives are correct, wanting to be righteous, but their outcome are always skewed.

Sometimes the Separatists have built a Christian subculture -a cheesy, vanilla flavored, sanctified copycat version of pop culture. Other times Separatists have done some fairly epic, but irrelevant acts, like a guy named Simeon Stylites a monk type figure alive in the 400′s who lived on top of a 50 ft. pillar for over 36 years, in order to escape the wicked world.

The plan backfired and he became a rock star in his own right, only attracting more “worldly” fame.

For fear of going out of the world, the Conformists (in the book “deceived people lovers”) have forever become of the world. Their motives are correct, wanting to be relevant, but their outcomes are always skewed too.

Many Conformists become church haters and hypocrites. Conformists want to change the stereotype of Christians being lame, but they cross the line and the limits by simply conforming to the world, instead of transforming it.

5. How do you the concepts of Transformist living and a holistic worldview manifest themselves in the local church? How do those churches model “the fine line” for their communities?

Let me give two concrete examples (I am a simple guy and I like simple illustrations).

My church (Grace Church) has started a free medical clinic called Grace Clinic (check out the video clip HERE). Doctors, nurses, and volunteers show up every Wednesday night to offer free health care to those who have no insurance. We offer prayer first. Some people accept it and some refuse.

We give people a taste of the Kingdom and some want more. Some just want a prescription. We now have several people in our church who started out as Grace Clinic patients. Although initially unbelievers, they made the decision to follow Jesus. Some of these people are hardened people: ex-convicts, drug addicts, and people wanting sex changes. Still Jesus has freed them from their addictions and given them holistic peace in this life and the next.

Because not all readers can do a “Grace Clinic” I’ll share a less glamorous story. A few months back I’m at the YMCA doing my routine workout. I see a man next to me obviously struggling with his mp3 player. I asked him if he needed help. Turns out Bob, a 71 year old, African American, needed an introduction into the technological age.

After several encounters and several lessons with iTunes, Bob started attending our church. Just last month he stayed after the service and informed me that he wanted to give his life to Jesus. Evidently, the light he saw in his mother’s eyes before she passed was the same light he saw in people’s eyes at our church and he wanted it.

Urgent Prayer Needed!!!

In urgent prayer needed on December 1, 2008 at 2:00 pm

To those faithful prayer warriors who follow this blog…

Please pray for Miahna (Mee/ah/na) Hershberger. Miahna is not even a week old and was home for 2 days when her parents noticed that she was not acting normal. A trip tot he hospital and a parents wrst nightmare…she was in critical condition. They life flighted Miahna to Akron Children’s Hospital and Joe and Bethany (her parents) were told there was nothing they could do, that she would not make it much longer.

That was Saturday early morning. After some talking with another Physician, He decided that the doctor’s weren’t right, and being the one and only GREAT PHYSICIAN, God himself sent stabilizing efforts and the earthly physicians were amazed. Of course, we aren’t!

Miahna has stabilized for a few days now and the doctor’s say that her turn-around is nothing short of miraculous, but of course she is fragile and in serious, but stable condition for now.

I ask that on behalf of the family (Joe, Bethany, brothers: Ezekiel, Josiah, and sister Arella) that you pray for them right now. That God would continue to do the impossible in Miahna’s life.

Here are the details of what is wrong at this time:

Miahna’s heart basically has three problems. First, there is a hole inside, making two chambers of the heart into one. The second, and of most concern, is her aortic arch. Finally, her aortic valve is half the size it should be.

Any surgery on her heart is on hold until her lungs strengthen.

The conditions that Miahna has are Interrupted Aortic Arch and VSD or Ventricular Septal Defect.

Pray the vent comes out soon and she can breathe on her own and that the surgeries might be performed long ahead of the time line they are giving now. First, she has to strengthen a whole bunch. I was blessed as I held her tiny hand and she wrapped her little fingers around my finger. It was as if God’s presence just burst into the room in great power.

The most recent details, prayers and comments can be found at THIS SITE set up just for Miahana.

In the next few days we will be setting up an on-line, secure giving site where donations may be sent for the family. Joe is heart broken, but needs to return to work today and they had insurance on the baby, but it doesn’t start until 6 weeks after birth, which is going to be excruciating on the parents.

Pray that the staff can work to secure funding as Children’s hospital has an amazing network and ability to work with insurance companies, because the Hershberger’s will be facing huge bills. (Just the 1 hour trip and overnight stays will be crazy).

And if you can help occasionally with child care, please let VICKI know: vicki@newhopewired.tv THIS IS A HUGE NEED!!!

I will let everyone know when the secure online giving is up and going.

The pictures below are 1) Looking Great at Birth 2) Looking Great in the Hands of God, but some stinkin’ tubes and pokey things that we want out.

the most creative place on earth.

In Big Church-Small Town;, are you kidding me? on December 1, 2008 at 5:01 am

I love to watch stuff like the AMA’s, MTV Awards, Academy Awards…why? To see the latest in technology, staging, sound, equipment, creativity, fonts, etc.

I also love going to concerts, huge plays, etc. that are top tier. Why? Same reason.

I wonder when people from those places will start coming to the church to see what we are doing to be creative and engaging so they can best engage their culture because we are killing it so well in the church?

Shouldn’t the church of JESUS CHRIST be the best, most cutting edge, creative, engaging place on this earth so that we might REACH millions and TEACH them as the GREAT COMMISSION commands us?

I am outraged and embarrassed.
