Our tech/worship/jack of all trades love HIS FRO.

In Watch This on November 28, 2008 at 5:01 am

Dan Knight the beloved has a HUGE FRO though you can’t see it very well in this little video I captured at Thanksgiving Eve Family Prayer and Praise…and you will notice that he loves it so much he made some changes to the classic words of the DOXOLOGY.

Thanks for the smile Dan! By the way…way to bring it acoustic after the FRO comment. I was pretty impressed and I know God was too.

No really. I don’t deserve all I have been given.

My Salvation
My Wife
My Kids
My Family (all of you! those I claim, and those I don’t:)
My Church
My Staff
My Friends
My House
Food, clothes and clean water
My Way more than enough “stuff”
My Golf Clubs, and coming soon…MY SKI’S
And most of all: MY GOD!

I don’t deserve any of this.

multi-site in a small town…final pieces of the puzzle.

In multi-sites on November 24, 2008 at 2:22 pm

Check out the older rants if you missed them from last week.

Question 4: Does your staff and congregation know you are going to a new level?

So…Do they know that you will less to un-accessible? Will your staff understand that you will not be around to call all the shots? Does your congregation understand that you will not be the primary care pastor? Are they ready for a more CEO pastor or do they still want the loving pastor who is always around and available.

Some of you might say…wait, I can pull this off. Of course if you are running a smaller first campus, then these things might not be true for you, but here this if you are:

Craig Groeshel gave three things that churches must be doing before going multi-site at the Catalyst One Day last week:

* They are using up their building completely.
* You are missional and convinced you need to reach more people.
* You have the leadership to pull it off.

Question 5: Are you already leading a “growing” catalytic organization?

Take note of that first one in Craig’s list. If you are not growing to the point where you are using your entire building multiple times, I agree with Craig that you are not ready for multi-site.

Without a growing staff, multiple services, and other “pop” factors, multi-site will become multi-slave and might even stall the vision at your first campus. The lack of catalytic leadership at all levels have hampered us at times, but all of the other factors were there.

Make sure that you have answered ALL the questions and not just some before starting out on this crazy adventure called “multi-site”.

I pray nothing but HIS blessings and leading in your life as you seek this next level in your leadership and ministry!

More huge things to consider before going multi-site in a small town. part 3

In multi-sites on November 19, 2008 at 5:01 am

Questions #1 and 2, are here. This one is HUGE, especially if you are a video venue. If not, adjust the question to fit your context.

QUESTION 3: Is the primary teacher(s) transferable on video?

And YES, video works in small towns. I would rather watch a video than not so great preaching live any day. It took us years (literally) to buy into it, but we drank the kool-aid and it has paid off. Even our campus in China uses 100% video and they love it. God’s Word transcends culture, race, creed, language and media form!

If you are not that great live (but other things make your ministry blossom) then don’t think without supernatural intervention that video will be any better. You have to be well above average live if you think you will make it on video.

If you have secondary teachers that don’t have as high a gift, make sure that they teach shorter and that you help them understand the dynamics of video. (Move around a bit, eye contact with the cameras, use props, etc.)

And this is just as important: YOU MUST HAVE EXCELLENT EQUIPMENT AND PROCESS! Don’t short-cut this! If you do, it will look like a great “Christian” film, and we all know how great those are (did you see Left Behind? Sorry guys…). Every short-cut, oops and technical miscue such as poor audio and lighting hurts twice as bad on video.

Couple other things: Ease them into video by piloting with your crowd. We did the “Nooma” type outdoor teachings many times before going to just a “sermon on the stage.”

And when I teach, I demand 9 times out of 10 that we film the first 2-5 minutes outdoors or somewhere on video so that we all start “at the same place” before making the transition to the stage. Check out any of our teachings recently to see this modeled. It makes the transition that much easier.

People laugh, cry, react, raise their hands, and most importantly, hundreds have trusted Christ watching a video sermon…so take the above and use it for GOD’S HONOR AND GLORY! It’s a heck of a risk, it takes a ton of time and resources, but the pay-off is worth it!

back tomorrow for part 4. peace!

5 things to consider before going multi-site in a small town…part 2.

In multi-sites on November 18, 2008 at 4:34 am

Yesterday we talked about the importance of a top-level team at all levels.

Question #2: Do you have MATURE systems in place to handle growth and sustain momentum with that team?

I just finished 2 calls in 2 days with great leaders of whom I asked about question 1, which I believe is one of the most important. This question is a next-level question.

Once you have a great team who will bleed for the mission…do you have the systems in place to facilitate the growth? Don’t forget you should experience GROWTH as you launch. We grew by 300-400 by launching our 2 campuses. Are your systems ready to handle that?

Do you have enough staff to handle this growth? If your systems are still trying to be worked out at your first campus, then you will send the same dysfunction to site #2.

Are small groups and assimilation mature (I didn’t say GREAT…but MATURE and headed in the right direction with leadership and finances in place)?

Are your technology people able to handle multiple campuses?

How about children’s, worship, support ministries, outreach, youth, finances, etc.?

Of course you can hire people at the campuses to do this, but what is the learning curve for a new staff person unless they are capable and come from within? And even then, how long does it take for them to learn and fit in and start to make a gain in momentum for you? For us, it seems to be 6 months to a year, and in some cases, multiple years!

If you have dysfunction in your systems (and you know if you do, and we have plenty if you are keeping score) don’t think they will go away as you grow and “hire” them away with the “new growth”. It takes time for a new campus to mature just to give enough to support the new minimal staff you have. Remember your journey to get there at your campus?

You will be spinning plates and trying to overcome bad systems in 2 places if you don’t have mature systems ready to be implemented across 2 or more campuses.

Join us back tomorrow as I write about one of the most important questions to ask that will make or break a multi-site.

Let’s Talk…5 Things to Consider Before Going Multi-Site in a Small Town

In multi-sites on November 17, 2008 at 5:01 am

After going down the multi-site road for a few years…and talking with a bunch of people in small towns who are ready to launch multi-sites…I want to share some of the lessons we have learned the hard way and maybe it will help you decide if you are ready to go multi-site in a small town.

QUESTION #1: As lead pastor, is your main job casting vision, study, and prayer at least 90% of your time or are you tied up doing other things?

If you do not have a STRONG TEAM under you that can carry out the details and lead the charge, you just DOUBLED your troubles and dis-functions. It doesn’t get ANY easier just because you have more people and might have more staff at other campuses.

Unless you are strong already at most levels, and I do mean most levels (not necessarily GREAT, but STRONG) and headed in the right direction…then don’t even think about it. If you are spinning too many plates instead of doing the Acts 6 thing (teaching of the Word and prayer should be our dedication), then you will inherit way more plates to spin, except that you will be running how ever many miles between spinning plates (campuses) to accomplish the spin.

Do you think Craig Groeshel, Perry Noble, Andy Stanley, or whomever are pulling the same weight at all their campuses? No way. They barely run their first campuses [they have an amazing team under them accomplishing it so they can do what they are called to do best...they are truly level 5 leaders]. Do you have to be level 5? You better be at least a 4 in my opinion.

Your first campus (don’t say main, central, mother ship) should be so not in need of you and your staff ready to take on another big challenge before considering multi-site. If not, you doubled your work, stress, and dis-function, which isn’t worth the net gain (we gained 400 or so already) from multi-sites. See ya back tomorrow for some more to chew on.

blessings!

Hey crazies! I have had several requests for speaking and/or consultation meetings. I am passionate to speak on church planting, rural church issues, smaller town multi-site, and other topics that would help you in your context, or maybe not, but I would give it my best shot!

I am available according to my schedule to do various types of leadership gatherings, preaching, and consultation with your church, leadership team or staff.

If you are interested, please contact me: charles@newhopewired.tv and if I can clear it with my bosses (my amazing wife–Tiffany and Vicki who is the world’s best assistant), I would be honored to serve the kingdom alongside you or your church and appreciate the fact that there would be a TON that I could learn from YOU and YOUR teams as well.

My schedule is pretty full, but I do have some space in 2009 for these opportunities. First come, first serve according to my calendar and commitment to this order: God, family, my church, outside engagements.

It TRULY is an HONOR to partner with each of you to serve the Kingdom!

The 50,000 Pairs in 50 Days Challenge

I love shoes. My closet is full of them.

Once at New Hope I challenged people to leave their shoes on the stage for people in need. Most left bare-footed, and I asked them to feel what it is like to go without a basic need like shoes.

Well, let’s talk shoes again.

soles4souls is an amazing charity in Nashville, TN that has one mission: get shoes to people who need shoes. over 300 million people around the world don’t have shoes and are forced to walk around unsafe and in potentially life-threatening conditions. not only is it unsafe physically, but having to look down all the time causes these people to also live without dignity and confidence.

$5 can buy 2 pairs of shoes for kids and other people in need.

I have a holy hang-over so much I can’t even blog. That is bad if you know me.

Hope to be back at it soon, but in the meantime, I need to rest. So I will just say this:

I AM BLOWN AWAY BY THE RESPONSE WE RECEIVED FROM ALL OF YOU.

From our volunteers @ New Hope who were beyond amazing to the speakers who lit a passion like no other to the staff and others who pulled this thing off. Pastors were changed FOREVER, and I am proud that we simply gathered a tribe of people and let Jesus take over. Tanks to all our volunteers for taking off work and all the other headaches you endured to serve the KINGDOM!

I also thank each of you who came to the sticks. I learned so much from you and the spirit that you have resting in you. I wish I could have gotten to meet more of you, but man…that was some fast-paced, intense action.

Some of you all in small towns are taking the kingdom by storm! That inspired me to the CORE. Many of you should have been on the stage…you have so much passion, wisdom and insight it is contagious! Maybe one day…

People were beyond blown away by every aspect of the conference. And not just because I was the host, but dang…it was intense, passionate and fun. The Sticks team really pulled it off. Way to go guys!

I pray that those who couldn’t make it or those who want to bring more of their teams will make it to a regional site. That’s right…we are taking it on the road with the sticks regional gatherings.

MARCH 17-18 @ BRAND NEW CHURCH hosted by Shannon O’Dell

MAY 12-13 @ REVOLUTION CHURCH hosted by Gary Lamb

Registration will launch soon. Keep checking out the SITE for more details.

One quick story of the many I heard first, second and third hand:

A pastor who has been at it for many years said he was ready to quit. After my session we hugged each other as he said…I’m back in the game. I will not quit.

That alone made it all worth it. Thanks and blessings to ALL of you who came and those who made it happen. It took the whole tribe to make it happen.

See you again as our paths cross or maybe at one of the regionals. Thanks for taking the Kingdom by storm!

Is over. I am tired. It was amazing. the place is overflowing with pastors, leaders and front line kingdom workers. Simply amazing.

What an amazing group of people who came here to learn from each other. This is one SHARP groups of leaders that have assembled in the middle of nowhere. I am honored to be a part of this community.

So much to say…but I need to go to bed.

1 story (of many) that will sum up the day: A pastor in his 60′s was ready to quit. Somehow he ended up at the sticks conference. God spoke to Him…He is not quitting. With tears in his eyes he thanked my from the depths of his soul.

This is why we do what we do. Plain and simple.

THANKS TO ALL OF YOU AT NEW HOPE WHO GAVE OF YOUR TIME AND TALENTS TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN! And to our amazing staff, volunteers and great people at New Hope who ALWAYS go the extra mile. Can’t hear enough about how gracious you have been.

And thanks to all of you who made the journey to be with us. I learned so much today. People kept thanking me and our team. I say, no…THANK YOU!

The highlight of the day for me was hanging with all of you, learning from you, hearing your passion and watching the passion flow during the communion celebration today. Wow. God’s Spirit was thick.

See ya in 10-1/2 hours. The best is yet to come.

Didn’t you get the e-mail?

This and other fun questions we will explore as we start a new series called FALLOUT. We will learn how to not just survive, but THRIVE during times of uncertainty. The church is called to be the LIGHT of the WORLD. How do we do that during times of chaos?

This week we are talking about whether this is THE END OF THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT! What are your thoughts?

We will examine a few questions such as: what are the end times, when is Jesus coming back, what are the signs of His return…all that and a bottle of Jones Soda in 35 minutes.

It’s going to be off the hook…or an hour over on the stop watch. I wouldn’t bet on it either way.

getting smaller as you get bigger.

In Church Leadership, community on November 6, 2008 at 5:01 am

From time to time people comment that they are sad to see people come and go at churches. They might in all love ask the staff to do something about it.

From time to time people comment that we should “grow deeper” at churches.
They might in all love ask the staff to do something about it.

From time to time our staff asks them back what they are doing to help care for others and what they are doing to “grow?” [We just completed a 10 week or so series on HOW TO GROW/SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINES: SELF-FEEDING].

Tonight as our fine group of ministry leaders and small group leaders gathered we reviewed how the CHURCH is to BE the CHURCH. The staff can’t keep track of the 1,200+ who call New Hope their home. And to get that many people doing this is monumental as well. It takes a ton of time and effort and the process literally takes years to gain traction when you have had rapid growth.

We talked about the 3 things as leaders we should be doing with the church and our teams:
Accountability/Belonging/Care (see Acts 2 and 6, etc.)

I have a team of 18-20 who I am engaged with this in (and that is a large task in itself). A small group, a group of friends and a group of people I am trying to reach for Christ.

It is not OPTIONAL that we BE the CHURCH. All of us. And this place and the fired up group of leaders I met with tonight are doing our best to make this happen. It’s not about a weekend experience. It is as much if not MORE about what happens during the in-between time! [Pastor Jeff Cooper reminded us well of this tonight!]

Are you engaged in this? If we aren’t a part of the solution, we might be a part of the problem. Who can you (and I) bring some Accountability/Belonging/Care too in Jesus name?
I am honored to serve with such amazing people. None of us are perfect. We are just trying to live out the life that Christ called us to. It won’t happen overnight, but inch by inch we are making HUGE progress!

a simple plea that will change eternity.

In the sticks conference on November 4, 2008 at 5:05 am

Most of you know that we are hosting the sticks conference for church leaders in small towns. We need your help to change eternity.

What is the sticks you ask? For all the details…go HERE.

We will have 200+ pastors and leaders learning from some of the best leaders from small towns in America at NEW HOPE. This is ground-breaking and it is our honor to host this gathering. They will not just be learning from NEW HOPE…but a TON of other amazing ministries and leaders. We will all be learning FROM EACH OTHER and not just a talking head on a stage. I can’t wait to learn and grow. I will be on fire after this deal. Just saying…so you know why I will be smoking.

Hey…we don’t have it all together. That’s not why we are hosting this. NO church ever has it all together. And if they think they do…watch out.

We are hosting this to encourage hurting pastors and leaders who are ready to quit. We are hosting this to light a fire in those who need some passion again. We are hosting this for those who are already on the front lines and pumped up, and want to hang out with other warriors. We are hosting this because God laid it on our hearts, and we are being obedient.

If you had a chance to impact hundreds of churches from around North America (yes, Canada is even in the house…we actually go from Colorado to the Atlantic Ocean and from Canada to Florida…only God). Anyway, if you could impact that many towns and churches…would you do something about it?

You can.

What you ask? Thanks for asking.

1. PRAY! (please. right now. and next Tuesday and Wednesday. our staff has a ton to do to prepare, so don’t forget about us as you pray!)

2. SERVE! Want to bless other pastors and leaders by serving next week? contact: tanya@newhopewired.tv or call the church office @ 419-994-1112

3. GIVE! Yes…would you consider sponsoring 1 or more pastors who can’t afford to come? Registration is $159 for our scholarship tickets. How about sponsoring half a registration? It could change a life, a church, a town, an eternity. It really could and it will. Contact me: charles@newhopewired.tv or call the church office.

4. HOUSE! Can you help by housing a pastor for a night or 2? It’s that simple! Contact Vicki: vicki@newhopewired.tv

It was specifically at 2 conferences in my life that I was changed forever. 1 was in 2000, and we picked up in faith and moved back to Loudonville to pursue ministry that was relevant instead of tired. The other was in 2001 and we decided that God was calling us to start NEW HOPE in LOUDONVILLE, OH. I guess that was a pretty significant impact from a conference of fired up leaders!

Guess what…we got a SCHOLARSHIP from willing people we will never know or meet who stepped up to help out those who couldn’t come any other way. They will never know the impact that they made. But eternity will bear witness to their faithfulness.

It changed our lives and many of your lives for eternity! How about it? There are a TON of pastors who are in small towns that cannot come due to finances. Please pray and respond in Jesus name. I bet we can gather 50-100 sponsorships and change up to 100 churches and towns for Christ like they have never been changed before.

Thank you. To all of those who read this blog [many of which don't come to New Hope, but would like to help change eternity]…let’s do this thing.

We just had our first sponsor:

THE HILL FAMILY. How ’bout it? We just stepped up. And you? [and we will be hosting someone in addition to praying for their registration. Don't know who yet...but we are ALL IN!]

IF YOU WILL DO THIS…we need to know by THURSDAY…so don’t delay. Thank you from the bottom of my heart and from those you will be helping.

Bring back the OLD songs in CHURCH!

In music, worship on November 2, 2008 at 1:20 pm

Or not. Or do. I LOVE singing hymns. Love them, really do. I want my kids to hear and know the words too (not necessarily the organ, et. al. Though I do like the organ…anyway.) I also LOVE new music that allows me to WORSHIP God in the beauty of His holiness and brings HIM GLORY. (that is the point, not my LIKES, but then, my likes are important…to me…dang.)

I am glad that there are different styles now at different gatherings (churches). For those still fighting over music…ummm, get over it. Start a new service maybe (but please don’t do a contemporary service @ 8:00 am…I swear I see that all the time.)

Long live all music that honors GOD and draws my spirit upward (but therein lies the problem…MY PREFERENCE, which is all it is.) And praise God that we have people at New Hope who don’t necessarily LOVE the music, but LOVE the mission. Blessings to you. And to all of our WORSHIP TEAMS and LEADERS…you are amazing. Thanks for being LEAD WORSHIPPERS. You do an outstanding job bringing HIM glory!

Check this post out…it will help you see why “there is NOTHING new under the sun.” (Ecclesiastes)

Dan Kimball includes a couple of letters in a recent blog post that I found interesting. Not sure if these can be substantiated as fact, but take a look… it sounds about right…

“I am no music scholar, but I feel I know appropriate church music when I hear it. Last Sunday’s new hymn – if you can call it that – sounded like a sentimental love ballad one would expect to hear crooned in a saloon. If you insist on exposing us to rubbish like this – in God’s house! – don’t be surprised if many of the faithful look for a new place to worship. The hymns we grew up with are all we need.”

Of course, this letter was written in 1863, and the song they were talking about was “Just as I Am”. Here’s another one…

“What is wrong with the inspiring hymns with which we grew up? When I go to church, it is to worship God, not to be distracted with learning a new hymn. Last Sunday’s was particularly unnerving. The tune was un-singable and the new harmonies were quite distorting.”

This letter was written in 1890 and about the hymn “What A Friend We Have In Jesus”.

Blessings and peace.

Voting Questions and Other Rants.

In politics on November 1, 2008 at 4:01 am

Many Christians struggle with who and what to vote for. The great people at New Hope are no different. I see Obama buttons as much as I see McCain ones. And I might just see more Sarah Palin buttons than anything else. People love a women that can skin a bull elk. Just ask ROEPKE.

Some might wonder why I don’t get heavily involved in politics. Thanks for asking:

1. I believe that GOD will appoint leaders as scripture says! (Romans 13.1-2)

2. I don’t think that we should just side-step the process and not fight for our candidates or vote. That’s about as rational as not witnessing because you are a Calvinist!

3. I believe that there is a level of corruption at all of those levels. I might be wrong, but I sense it pretty heavily. And it might not be outright corruption, but the influence of money speaks large.

4. I believe that REVOLUTION happens from the GROUND UP not the TOP DOWN. I don’t believe morality, vision, or any cause can be legislated or forced. It is “caught”. (This is a top one for me, though listed at #4)

5. Years ago, I pulled up in the lot at New Hope with my candidates sticker on the back of my vehicle. When leaving I noticed that there was a sticker from the “other side” on the vehicle right next to me. I went home, took it off and took the signs out of my yard. WHY?

Would I rather see my candidate in office, or someone’s eternity changed? I decided right then, that unless something directly contradicts scripture in a HUGE, OPPRESSIVE way, then I would let others in the church fight to get their message out and leave it up to the LORD’S SPIRIT to guide. Last time I checked, He didn’t need my help.

FOUL you say! What about abortion, what about the Supreme Courts, what about human cloning, what about…

Well, what about the death penalty, what about war, what about _____________. I think both sides have their issues, and I won’t tell you what mine are because I value your soul way to much to have a political issue get in the way. I prefer to let SCRIPTURE guide my views, not a politician or political party.

When there is something to fight for that is contrary to Scripture or that will be FORCED on my life or congregation…I will fight like HADES. Until then, I will choose to be neutral and allow the SPIRIT of GOD to lead.

What I have always done is put out information from the Ohio Christian Coalition which is a voter guide that reflects a majority view of evangelical and other Christian voters views in Ohio.

Might I just say at the outset the obvious: that I know that this guide reflects a majority Republican position. If anyone has a positional statement from another point of view or party that is conservative/evangelical in nature, I would be glad to link it. Don’t send far left (or right) for that matter…those people are nuts. Both sides.

Here is a nice string of posts from both sides from my friend and great leader TIM STEVENS. Check them out. Great balance from both sides in reporting from a Christian perspective. Another great, short RANT can be found HERE. By Perry Noble who should never be missed.

The only limb I will walk on is to say that the Republican party traditionally in my generation has accepted the views of conservative/evangelical Christians more than other parties. Especially sensitive is the pro-life abortion and end of life issues along with the stem cell debate, just to name a few. But they have not looked after the needs of the poor and underpriviledged, have not stopped genocide. We could stop the water problems in the world by spending $10 billion dollars. So there are issues on BOTH sides from my Christian lenses.

And that is NOT an endorsement if you are asking. I am simply putting that out there as fodder, because it is true and there is no spin on that one.

And that annoys me, that it seems you can only be one side or the other on (most) ANY ISSUE, CHRISTIAN or NOT, because there is not much crossing the aisle on that or many other issues. Can’t we ever JOIN HANDS again and agree for something that will push this country ahead TOGETHER? What happened to that one?

Come on people! Wake up! Our country is in need and you all (congress, et al.) are a bunch of selfish babies at times. (Most of the time).

Someone needs to step up and get a 3rd party involved. If it were up to me…I would call it the COMMON SENSE PARTY. That’s the only true way to see this non-sense come back to a normal level. But $$ talks, so unless you got a ton of it, and I mean a ton…don’t look for the COMMON SENSE PARTY any time too soon.

And yes, I still will continue to pray for those in leadership whether I like that person or not. We are CALLED By SCRIPTURE TO DO THIS!

And a reminder that the views here on this blog are SOLELY mine and not New Hope Community Church. And despite the comments controversy…they are free and open and will be published aside from personal, over-the-top attacks. I have listened and heard from the comment oppressed (and they are right). Comment away!
