happy reformation day!

In Church History, Devotional on October 31, 2007 at 2:08 pm

(wikipedia.com)

Reformation Day is a religious holiday celebrated on October 31 in remembrance of the Reformation, particularly by Lutheran and some Reformed church communities. It is a civic holiday in Slovenia (since the Reformation contributed to its cultural development profoundly, although Slovenians are mainly Roman Catholics) and in the German states of Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia.

On this day in 1517, Martin Luther posted a proposal at the doors of a church in Wittenberg, Germany to debate the doctrine and practice of indulgences. This proposal is popularly known as the 95 Theses, which he nailed to the Castle Church doors. This was not an act of defiance or provocation as is sometimes thought. Since the Castle Church faced Wittenberg’s main thoroughfare, the church door functioned as a public bulletin board and was therefore the logical place for posting important notices. Also, the theses were written in Latin, the language of the church, and not in the vernacular. Nonetheless, the event created a controversy between Luther and those allied with the Pope over a variety of doctrines and practices. When Luther and his supporters were excommunicated in 1520, the Lutheran tradition was born.

Within the Lutheran church, Reformation Day is considered a minor festival, and is officially referred to as The Festival of the Reformation. Until the 20th Century, most Lutheran churches celebrated Reformation Day on October 31st, regardless of which day of the week it occurred. Today, most Lutheran churches transfer the festival, so that it falls on the Sunday (called Reformation Sunday) on or before October 31st and transfer All Saints’ Day to the Sunday on or after November 1st.

The liturgical color of the day is red, which represents the Holy Spirit and the Martyrs of the Christian Church. Luther’s hymn, A Mighty Fortress is our God is traditionally sung on this day. Lutherans customarily stand during the hymn, in memory of its use in the religious wars of the Sixteenth Century.

It is also traditional in some Lutheran schools for schoolchildren to hold Reformation Day plays or pageants that re-enact scenes from the life of Martin Luther.

This is the only “holiday” I choose to acknowledge today as a follow of Christ. So sing it out today wherever you are…

A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing;
Our helper He, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing:
For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe;
His craft and power are great, and, armed with cruel hate,
On earth is not his equal.
Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing;
Were not the right Man on our side, the Man of God’s own choosing:
Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is He;
Lord Sabaoth, His Name, from age to age the same,
And He must win the battle.
And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us,
We will not fear, for God hath willed His truth to triumph through us:
The Prince of Darkness grim, we tremble not for him;
His rage we can endure, for lo, his doom is sure,
One little word shall fell him.
That word above all earthly powers, no thanks to them, abideth;
The Spirit and the gifts are ours through Him Who with us sideth:
Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also;
The body they may kill: God’s truth abideth still,
His kingdom is forever.

frost

In Church Leadership, Devotional, My Life on October 29, 2007 at 2:25 pm

Yes, it’s that time of the year again. Last week was at the beach for a conference…this week frost! The golf clubs are ready to be retired for the Winter, but do not despair, it’s time to get the ski’s out! (I love to ski…anyone heading to Holiday Valley I can hitch a ride with soon?) Anyway…I looked out the door this morning to see this view.

The frost will kill, but the focus of the picture is the beauty of the flower. What am I focusing on? The frost that will bring death, or the life that still is? Even when the frost kills, it is a natural part of what needs to occur for life to come back next Spring.

I am in a period of cold, distant relationship with my God…ever been there? And it is not His job to always draw near to me…I have to draw near to Him! It’s not that He pulls back…it is that I fail to notice when things are not “livin’ large.”

So today I am reflecting not on the frost, but the beauty. The little things. Like last night watching “Evan Almighty” with friends eating chili–going to take Grace out of school today and surprising her with lunch (one benefit to having a lousy day off!)–Joi smiling ear to ear looking at her birthday cards–the beautiful attitude and special smile of my Wife today–Christian and I are now “chat” buddies and he now wants a blog, so he can help others come to church by his writing–seeing the church carry on in my absence the last 2 weeks (this is a key to all you church leaders out there!)–my Sisters who love and support me, one wrote me a verse this AM…”I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.” (Philippians 4.13)–Rejoicing with her as they closed a big deal for 2 new decks to be built–watching my Father-in-Law engaged in our church for the first time since we opened 5 years ago–I could go on and on…

So…frost, off with your vial, wicked head! I choose to draw near to the Mighty God, the Warrior I serve. How about you? And especially if you are a church leader…we have no other choice but to prevail! Right?

peace and blessings.

spastic week…spastic colon?

In My Life, New Hope Stuff on October 28, 2007 at 5:16 pm

So…as you see, I have been gone lately. it has been spastic to say the least…and I couldn’t post…so here is a quick update on my week(s).

Joi swallows penny, emergency surgery–finish up Mosaic series with a connection group push…if you missed it, listen/watch here…everyone should be in a connection group! Mosaic Part 4–off to Myrtle Beach for a Church Planters conference– red dirt–churches every 1-2 miles–no joke–great architecture–great views–1 cool looking old church out of all of them–my favorite restaurant Sonny’s–Chapin, S.C., my nephew’s namesake–stopped at one of the fasted growing churches in America (New Spring Church), stole great ideas like: cafe and bookstore signage, all-access pass, sound levels for worship, great servant’s heart and spirit there–off to the conference–good talks, good food, good fellowship, good golf–came down sick–rush home–change flights and cities–drive 3-1/2 hours–get delayed–miss connection–get home late–go to hospital–have a spastic colon (it’s a crappy thing to have :) –buy fiber capsules at age 33–Dr. says to de-stress–clean an investment house–celebrate daughter’s birthday (Joi is 3!)–wireless internet finally at house!–visit Life Church on-line for church today at their internet campus as I had to stay in bed and rest today (cool, church in bed?)–visit with in-laws–watch the Bengals play like stink–and back to de-stress? Yeah Right!

I will enjoy tonight and my “day-off” tomorrow. Looking forward to the new series that starts next week…”Ghost Hunter” Exploring the Other Side… Bring all your family and friends. I promise that we will speak to them through this series. No really, if they are to consider the claims of Christ and eternity, this is the one…great stuff planned…by God’s power and grace at least!

Blessings and peace, and thanks for your PRAYERS! No really, pray for us right now. Thanks!

1 John 4:4
“But you belong to God, my dear children. You have already won a victory over those people, because the Spirit who lives in you is greater than the spirit who lives in the world.” (nlt)

Simplicity at the Speed of Life

In Church Leadership, Devotional on October 18, 2007 at 2:00 pm

For those of you who are leaders, or not, and those of you who are running fast and needing to simplify (probably 99% of us!). Here is a great post from one of my favorite bloggers, Tony Morgan from New Spring Church (where I will be this weekend!) Enjoy!

The Age of Speed

Speed. On my way to Dallas the other day, I read The Age of Speed: Learning to Thrive in a More-Faster-Now World by Vince Poscente. Poscente is a former speed-skiing Olympian with an interesting perspective of speed in today’s organizations. Here are some of the highlights from my reading:

* “With the boom in technology enabling us to achieve speed in almost every imaginable way, speed is no longer a luxury–it’s an expectation. And the more we get, the more we seem to want.”

* “Because we have finite lives and infinite imaginations, our demand for speed goes up in relation to what we have the potential to achieve.”

* “More options lead to more stress–whether we choose to pursue them or not. When we have a lot of options and many decisions to make, our destinies become less clear.”

* “Frequently, when we reduce the time it takes to do something insignificant, we end up using the saved time on yet another insignificant activity.”

* “Part of Google’s new hiring policy is to seek out overqualified people considered likely to be promoted multiple times.”

* “Some kinds of clutter actually make you feel you’re going faster, even as they slow you down.”

* “By juggling too many tasks or allowing too many distractions, you condition your brain to stay overstimulated, weakening your ability to concentrate.”

* “Some companies designate time each week, each month, or each quarter for work only: no meetings, no expectations for immediate response, no pop-ins.”

* “Misalignment dissipates the energy of passion, but when people and organizations are aligned with an authentic purpose, they accomplish everything faster.”

* “Simplicity is essential to–the foundation for–becoming aligned. It is nearly impossible to be complex and also be aligned and fast.”
(Above post from Tonymorganlive.com)

It seems so simple, especially in our walk with God. We want everything so fast, so aligned, so proper, so in order. But God doesn’t always work that way.

He is complex, yet simple: I am love, I am peace, I am truth.

Love like me, serve like me, live like me, pursue me, while pursuing others.

I make a mess of most things because of the speed I run life at…how about you?

Whether at our profession of WORK or our profession of CHRIST, may I slow down, to see the Father in all things the way He would have me to see Him.

peace.

every nation, every tribe, every tongue

In New Hope Stuff, Watch This on October 11, 2007 at 6:58 pm

As I sit at the Seminary Library preparing for this weekend, I can’t help but smile and worship God watching this video I ran across. I wonder if the guys and gals of Pentecost would have imagined this. Watch this…these kids are simply amazing and remember that we are not the only ones in the world who have a handle on worship (at least those of us stuffy Americans who think we do because there is only one way to worship God…our way…oops, another time and post)…imagine the languages and expressions of faith that God enjoys every moment of the day…I know He deserves more from me…and the world. This expression of worship is from Korea (set to the song: Every Move I Make)…listening to it in a different language and style really made it fresh in my life. Enjoy!

See ya this weekend as we will be talking about living lives of brokenness on purpose and with passion. We have an incredible creative arts surprise this weekend with the Mosaic theme in mind…I promise it will be pretty cool. And don’t forget about our ministry fair this weekend after each service. Rumor has it that the food will be worth the stay.

peace to you.

In New Hope Stuff, Poll Results on October 4, 2007 at 7:14 pm

Wow…didn’t see Tea taking the top spot in the latest poll on favorite drinks. I love tea…but it has to be Southern, Sweet, and I mean Sweet Tea. The kind that after you drink it and sweat, bees are more than attracted to you and a stray hummingbird or 2 buzzes your head at mach 4.

Here are the results:

Tea: 37%
Sports Drinks: 25%
H2O: 21%
Coke/Pepsi/Energy Drinks: 15%
Milk: 12%
Other: 9%

C ya this weekend…Will be some of the most important teachings we will have for the year. You don’t want to miss what God has in store…at least I pray He shows up and has something big in store despite the messengers.

blessings!

campuses and bummers

In Church Leadership, My Life, New Hope Stuff on October 2, 2007 at 8:31 pm

Wow…if you missed last weekend’s Vision 2012 message, you missed some awesome news. (See previous post). The good news is that we already have people signing up to give their time, talents and treasure to be a part of the Ashland Campus launch team next year. Please be in prayer about finding a Campus Pastor and a space to meet! Both are critical outside of building a launch team. Interested? E-mail me (charles@newhopewired.tv)!

Also so excited about CHINA…I shake my head in amazement. If your heart burns with this passion to reach people in China, please be in prayer or consider helping us get there by financially partnering with us as we need $3,000-$4,000 to make the set-up journey, which is crucial to mapping out the plan, strategy and leadership development needed. Please be in prayer for equipment and other needs they will have and of course for protection. It is tough over there as you know.

Who would have thought that 5 years ago we would be talking about 4 campuses and hundreds of lives being changed for eternity? I can tell you that my vision wasn’t large enough. I am glad that God sends the vision for us to follow.

The bummer…took my bride to her first professional football game last night. Bengals vs. Patriots, Monday Night, 10 rows up, 1st row ( we waited 2 hours) for the ESPN pre-game show: Monday Night Countdown…and then the big letdown. Oh well, spending time with my Wife is truly priceless…even more priceless than a Bengals win.

peace and blessings.
